Edwin Chandraharan  (M.B.B.S. M.S (Obs & Gyn), DFSRH, DCRM, FSLCOG, FRCOG)     
Edwin is the Director of Global Academy of Medical Education & Training Ltd, and was the Lead Consultant for Labour Ward at St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London from 2005 to February 2020. He has been the Clinical Director for Women’s services from 2011-2015 and the Lead for Clinical Governance in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 2005-2017. He is passionate about delivering high quality patient care with a strong focus on Transformational Training, Risk Management and Patient Experience.  He was appointed as the Visiting Professor at the Tianjin Central Hospital for Women, Tianjin Province, China in 2016.

Teaching and Training

Edwin firmly believes in improving safety and quality of care by transformational teaching and training which leads .to changes in practice and improvement in care. He has received Gold Medals in Pathology, ENT and Head & Neck Surgery and in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Medical School as well as Gold Medals in both Master of Surgery Part 1 & Part 2 Examinations of the University of Colombo. He has been invited to both National and International Scientific Meetings to deliver lectures and seminars on fetal monitoring, obstetric emergencies, postpartum haemorrhage, acute gynaecology and early pregnancy ultrasound, Risk Management and Team Working.

Edwin conducts ‘Training the Trainers’’ Workshops and has been the course lead of the Basic Practical Skills Course at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and was the course co-ordinator for ‘CTG’ and ‘High Risk Labour and Intrapartum Emergencies’ courses at St. George’s University of London and is the current Course Lead for the Baby Lifeline CTG Masterclasses. He has been the co-organizer of the RCOG Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Course and he was on the Editorial Board of the National E-learning for Healthcare in Electronic Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring.

Edwin conducts over 25 CTG/ Fetal ECG Masterclasses in several centres in the UK, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia each year. He was the UK representative to the 3-member International Panel which revised the FIGO Guidelines on CTG, developed in conjuction with a consensus group of CTG experts from 50 countries. He was a member of the guideline group for the RCOG Greentop Guideline on Postpartum Haemorrhage (December 2016) as well as FIGO Guideline on Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) disorders (2018) and the First International Consensus Guideline on Physiology-based CTG Interpretation (2018).

Publications

Edwin has published several abstracts in National and International Scientific Meetings and over 100 Chapters and Review articles in various aspects of obstetrics and gynaecological practice. His special interests include intrapartum fetal monitoring, Risk Management & Team Working and massive postpartum haemorrhage. He contributed to the development of RCOG Good Practice Guideline ‘The Maternity Dashboard: Clinical Performance and Governance Score Card’, which has been implemented by many Trusts in the UK and was recommended by the Chief Medical Officer’s Report. He is a peer reviewer for The Lancet, BJOG, Journal of Perinatal Medicine, The Green Journal and European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology and Consultant Editor for the Global Library of Women’s Medicine.

Edwin is the Co-Editor of the Textbook ‘Obstetric and Intrapartum Emergencies: A Practical Guide to Management’ and an Associate Editor of High Risk Obstetrics: Management Options. He edited the Handbook of CTG Interpretation: from patterns to physiology (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Contribution to the wider NHS

Edwin led a regional multi-disciplinary Tertiary Referral Service for women with Abnormal invasion of the placenta, especially placenta percreta for 8 years. He developed the new conservative surgical technique ‘The Triple P Procedure’ for percreta, and he has performed 80 cases of the Triple P Procedure with no peripartum hysterectomy and the Triple P Procedure has now been incorporated as a conservative surgical option in the International FIGO Guidelines on Abnormal Invasion of the Placenta (2018). He was the RCOG Representative to the Maternity Services Improvement Board (MSIB) of NHS London and has been involved in the development of new models of care and to institute measures to improve maternity services in London. He was also a member of the Clinical Expert Group (CEP) set up to advice the Department of Health and NHS London on the future of maternity services. He was also a member of the Intrapartum Score Card Advisory Group of the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and was a member of the Clinical Leaders Network (CLN.

Edwin has also been involved in conducting Service Assessments and conducting external reviews of Maternal Deaths. He is an accredited Expert Witness and has appeared in both Coroner’s and the High Courts as an Expert Witness and holds the Cardiff Law School Expert Witness Certificate.

Edwin was part of the Team which won two National Awards in the UK: HSJ Value Award in 2016 and the BMJ Clinical Leadership Award in 2017 for ensuring a reduction in emergency caesarean sections and a low hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy rates in the UK through implementation of physiology-based CTG interpretation, with the use of Fetal ECG (STAN) and  staff training.
